Chemical Name: SERTRALINE (SER-tra-leen)
Common uses
Zoloft is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) used to treat depression, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), social anxiety disorder (social phobia), and a severe form of premenstrual syndrome (premenstrual dysphoric disorder - PMDD). Zoloft has also been used to
treat a sexual function problem in men. It may also be used to treat other conditions as determined by your doctor. Zoloft works by helping to restore the balance of certain natural chemicals in the brain.
Before Using
Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with Zoloft. INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. DO NOT TAKE Zoloft if you are also taking pimozide, weight loss drugs (e.g., fenfluramine, sibutramine), tryptophan, terfenadine, astemizole, dihydroergotamine, or monoamine
oxidase inhibitors - MAOI (e.g., furazolidone, isocarboxazid, linezolid, moclobemide, phenelzine, procarbazine, selegiline, tranylcypromine). If you are currently taking any of the medicines mentioned above, tell your doctor or pharmacist before starting sertraline. ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOUR DOSE OR CONDITION may be needed if
you are taking warfarin, lithium, tricyclic anti-depressants (e.g., amitriptyline), other SSRI anti-depressants (e.g., citalopram, fluvoxamine), nefazodone, venlafaxine, propafenone, flecainide, "triptan" migraine drugs (e.g., sumatriptan), carbamazepine, thioridazine, trazodone, ayahuasca, St. John's wort, clozapine, tramadol,
melatonin, dextromethorphan, meperidine, and buspirone. TELL YOUR DOCTOR about any other drugs besides sertraline that you are taking which may affect the heart rhythm (QTc prolongation in the EKG) such as dofetilide, quinidine, sotalol, procainamide, and sparfloxacin. QTc prolongation can infrequently result in serious, rarely fatal,
irregular heartbeats. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for details. Ask for instructions about whether you need to stop any other QTc-prolonging drugs you may be using in order to minimize the risk of this effect. TELL YOUR DOCTOR if you take any drugs that cause drowsiness, such as: medicine for sleep (e.g., sedatives), tranquilizers,
anti-anxiety drugs (e.g., diazepam), narcotic pain relievers (e.g., codeine), psychiatric medicines (e.g., phenothiazines such as chlorpromazine, or tricyclics such as amitriptyline), anti-seizure drugs (e.g., carbamazepine), muscle relaxants, antihistamines that cause drowsiness (e.g., diphenhydramine). Check the labels on all your
medicines (e.g., cough-and-cold products) because they may contain drowsiness-causing ingredients. Ask your pharmacist about the safe use of those products. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions including liver disease, seizures, heart disease, thyroid disease (e.g., hypothyroidism), any allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding.

Directions
Follow the directions for using Zoloft provided by your doctor. It is recommended you take your dosage at the same time each day, either in the morning or in the evening. Take this medication regularly in order to get the most benefit from it. CONTINUE TO TAKE THIS MEDICINE even if you feel better. STORE Zoloft at room temperature
at 77 degrees F (25 degrees C) away from light and moisture. Brief storage between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) is permitted. Do not store in the bathroom. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF Zoloft, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule.
DO NOT take 2 doses at once.
Cautions
SEVERAL WEEKS MAY PASS before Zoloft reaches its full effect. Do not stop taking Zoloft without checking with your doctor. DO NOT DRIVE, OPERATE MACHINERY, OR DO ANYTHING ELSE THAT COULD BE DANGEROUS until you know how you react to Zoloft. Using Zoloft alone, with other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or
to perform other potentially dangerous tasks. THIS MEDICINE WILL ADD TO THE EFFECTS of alcohol and other depressants. Ask your pharmacist if you have questions about which medicines are depressants. BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINE, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. This includes
any medicines that contain dextromethorphan. FOR WOMEN: IF YOU PLAN ON BECOMING PREGNANT, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using Zoloft during pregnancy. IT IS UNKNOWN IF THIS MEDICINE IS EXCRETED in breast milk. IF YOU ARE OR WILL BE BREAST-FEEDING while you are using Zoloft, check with your doctor or pharmacist
to discuss the risks to your baby.
Possible side effects
SIDE EFFECTS that may occur while taking Zoloft include nausea, dry mouth, increased sweating, drowsiness, diarrhea, upset stomach, or trouble sleeping. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR AS SOON AS POSSIBLE if you experience uncontrollable shaking (tremor), loss of appetite, unusual
weight loss. CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY if you experience decreased interest in sex, decrease in sexual ability (ejaculation delay), unusual or rapid weight gain, unusual or severe mental/mood changes, seizures. Males: In the unlikely event you experience a painful or prolonged erection, seek immediate medical attention as this
is considered a medical emergency. IF YOU EXPERIENCE difficulty breathing; dizziness; tightness of chest; swelling of eyelids, face, or lips; or if you develop a rash or hives, tell your doctor immediately. Do not take any more doses of Zoloft unless your doctor tells you to do so. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact
your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist.

If you take too much
If overdose is suspected, contact your local poison control center or emergency room immediately. Symptoms of overdose may include increased heartbeat, dizziness, or agitation.
Additional information
DO NOT SHARE Zoloft with others for whom it was not prescribed. DO NOT USE Zoloft for other health conditions. KEEP Zoloft out of the reach of children and pets. IF USING THIS MEDICINE FOR AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME, obtain refills before your supply runs out.
